Tether (USDT) is issued on several blockchains. The token is worth the same everywhere, but each version lives on its own network with its own addresses and fees. Sending USDT on one network to an address that expects another is the most common way people lose stablecoins.
The two networks most people use
| TRC-20 (TRON) | ERC-20 (Ethereum) | |
|---|---|---|
| Address format | Starts with T, 34 characters | Starts with 0x, 42 characters |
| Typical transfer fee | Low; paid in TRX or energy | Varies with gas; paid in ETH |
| Confirmation time | About a minute | A few minutes |
| Best for | Payments, exchange transfers, swaps | DeFi, Ethereum apps |
How to tell which one you have
Look at the address. If it starts with T, it is TRON. If it starts with 0x, it is Ethereum or another EVM chain (BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum share the same format — which is exactly why you must also check the network name).
Which one noaml uses
We receive and send USDT on TRON (TRC-20) by default because it is cheap and fast. When you swap ETH to USDT or TRX to USDT, enter a TRON address starting with T. If you only have an Ethereum wallet, swap to USDC instead, which we handle as ERC-20.
Sending from an exchange
When you withdraw USDT from an exchange, it asks you to choose the network. Pick TRC-20 for a TRON address. If the exchange auto-selects a network, check it before confirming.
What if I already sent to the wrong network?
If you sent ERC-20 USDT to a TRON deposit address of a service, the funds did not arrive on TRON. Contact support with the transaction hash; recovery is sometimes possible when the same private key controls both formats, but it is never guaranteed.
Questions people ask
Is USDT TRC-20 safe?
It is the same Tether-issued token as on Ethereum, just on a different chain. Safety depends mostly on using the right address and network.
Do I need TRX to send USDT TRC-20?
Your wallet needs a small amount of TRX (or energy) to pay the network fee when you send. Receiving needs nothing.
Can I swap USDT TRC-20 to ERC-20?
Swap USDT (TRC-20) to USDC (ERC-20) or ETH; both are on Ethereum.
